WOC25 - Special 25th Anniversary Event, Kooyoora, Sun Sept 5

It’s time to relive the glory days of 1985 – or find out what all the excitement was about! Dandenong Ranges OC is proud to bring you “WOC25” – a re-run of the 1985 World Orienteering Championships courses at Kooyoora State Park in Victoria's north west . Unlike the original WOC, when the competitors did not even find out they were going to Kooyoora until 6pm the night before the event, we’re giving you a sneak peek at the courses on offer. Please review the information below before choosing your course. Entries are now open at http://entries.bendigo-orienteers.com.au, and close on August 29. We strongly recommend using the online entry system to guarantee yourself a pre-marked map (essential at Kooyoora!) It’s quick, easy, and helps us keep costs down and save trees, by allowing us to print only the maps we need. Entry fees (pay on day): OV members $12 adults, $6 juniors, $30 families / Non members $18 adults, $9 juniors, $45 families.

Course 1 – Long Hard 11.6 km, 19 controls (from original WOC courses)

Features 18 of the original WOC Men’s course control sites, in the same order (but with a different starting point). The closest you’ll come to the full WOC experience - not for the fainthearted!

Course 2 – Medium Hard 6.9 km, 13 controls (from original WOC courses)

Although the start point differs, the first 9 controls replicate the original WOC Women’s course, with the last 4 controls borrowed from the Men’s course, for a great WOC challenge

Course 3 – Short Hard 3.9 km, 8 controls (from original WOC courses)

A mix of control sites selected from both WOC courses gives you highlights of the original, over a shorter distance

Course 4 – Moderate 2.7km, 10 controls (new course) Being a World Championship, none of the original control sites or legs were suitable for a moderate course, so we’ve designed a new course especially for those who would like to try Kooyoora in moderation!

Assembly is at the lower picnic ground on Melville Caves Road. Start times between 10am and 12 noon. Water on courses will be limited – we strongly recommend you carry your own water.

Directions: Take the Calder Highway to Inglewood . Turn west onto the Inglewood-Rheola Road, to Kooyoora State Park . From Kingower, follow Orienteering signs to the lower picnic ground on Melville Caves Road. Overnight camping and toilets are available.

In addition to the races, we’re having a “Beat the Winner” contest – see how close you can come to the WOC winning split time on a designated leg (common to courses 1-3). There’s also a “Name the Orienteer” photo competition – how many youthful faces you can recognise? We’re also having a WOC/WOCARN memorabilia display. If you have any souvenirs that you would like to have included, please contact me or bring them along on the day.

New Night Series - Monday 37s Handicap!

2010 sees the start of a brand new concept in street orienteering!  "Monday 37s" is a handicap event where ANYONE can win, regardless of their speed, age, gender, or fitness.  There are 25 controls on the map, each worth either 1 or 2 points.  All competitors have a "starting score" allocated by our Master Handicapper, and must then earn points up to 37.  So if your handicap is 12, you must earn 25 points on the course.  If you are first across the line, you win the highly prized Yellow Fluoro Jersey!  Participants earn Millennium Club points, and season tickets are available.

Monday 37s starts on March 29, and runs for 30 weeks.  For the calendar of events, visit http://vic.orienteering.socialfx.net/parkstreet/
