Victorian Sprint Championships 2012 |
|
DROC was the most successful club at the 2012 Victorian Sprint Championships, winning five age groups. Congratulations to Asha, Lanita and Janine Steer, Stephen Brown, and Peter Yeates, who are all 2012 Champions! In addition, club president Peter Hobbs took on a field of 73 competitors and beat them all comfortably in the hotly contested Campus Challenge.
The venue was Haileybury College in Keysborough, using a brand new map produced by Martin Steer. Martin received many compliments on the clarity, detail and accuracy of the map, which combined the junior and senior campuses, and featured many irregularly-shaped buildings, narrow corridors, small courtyards and various nooks and crannies. Course setter Ian Dodd took full advantage of these, tucking the controls away and forcing competitors to navigate carefully while maintaining their speed. He provided some difficult route choices, fast running across open areas, and set a few traps which some fell into when controls were overlooked.
DROC were the organisers of the day, which featured a record number of competitors and a particularly strong junior contingent. Our team of volunteers ensured that the event ran smoothly, with a relaxed, fun atmosphere. We would like to acknowledge the warm welcome given to us by the school, and to thank Pam King and Kathy Liley for their invaluable assistance and advice.
You can see all the results here and some photos here.

Winter Park and Street Orienteering |
|
Enjoy a run or walk with a map, in Melbourne's suburban parks and streets on Monday or Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons. Exercise body and mind! DROC runs park and street orienteering events throughout winter. The aim is to use the map provided to navigate to pre-designated checkpoints in the fastest time or shortest distance. These events are ideal for newcomers, families, and sporting or social groups. There are 40, 50 or 60 min courses for runners, and a 60 minute course for Power Walkers. No special equipment or navigational skill is required. Bring a watch and a torch for night events, and wear comfortable shoes. Events cost $4 for adults and $2 per juniors (under 21). We provide coaching to get you started. Register from 6.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 1.30pm on Saturdays. For a list of DROC's events, click on our "Coming Events" list.
